GERMAN OLIVER, M.D., began his medical career at the University of Puerto Rico, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and was awarded top honors. He went on to complete his internship and residency in Internal Medicine and his fellowship in Gastroenterology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Dr. Oliver began practicing medicine at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center, where he received the Physicians in Training Research Award presented by the William Beaumont Gastrointestinal Symposium. In 1988, he relocated to Dallas to open his own gastroenterology practice and teach as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at Southwestern Medical School. Today, he splits his time between his medical practice and partnership at Texas GI Center in Mesquite, Texas, delivering dedicated care to each patient.
Of course, Dr. Oliver finds time to stay balanced, fitting in a bit of fun between the long work hours. He travels the world whenever possible—he has toured 75 countries, including all of Asia and Africa. During his travel, he explores the local cuisine and visits the opera, naming Lucia di Lammermoor and La Boehme among his favorite performances. In his daily life, Dr. Oliver practices with a private Pilates trainer, who integrates Pilates principles with strength training and kickboxing. He also enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. When asked why he chose to specialize in gastroenterology, Dr. Oliver says, “It’s one of the fields that is very challenging. [We are] working with multiple organ systems. Here, we deal with esophageal pathology, gastropathology, liver pathology, pancreatic pathology—it’s among the most all-encompassing subspecialties of internal medicine. [There is] a lot of variety in the day to day work.”
Dr. Oliver says one of his favorite things about being a doctor is talking with his patients—he loves listening and getting to know each patient and even perhaps, exchanging a few personal stories of travel with fellow globetrotters who happen to come through his office. Although Dr. Oliver knows that there isn’t a cure for every ailment, he strives to provide compassion and do everything he can to ensure his patients enjoy the highest quality of life possible.
